Does anyone know the purpose of this "charcoal canister"?

I think I can drive on it but I know it relates to fueling and was wondering if it’s okay to drive/ anything I need to lookout for. On my fiesta St. I smacked it and ripped the sensor out.

Gas expands in tank and needs to vent, you can’t vent to atmosphere cause thats bad. So it vents to a charcoal (activated carbon) canister to trap vapors until they can be fed back in through the EGR or return to tank.

Both excess fuel vapor from the injection system (or at least how it works for carburetors) as well as excess fumes from the tank are condensed and returned to the tank via the canister.

You can drive without it.

Fun fact - that thing is why you don’t want to top off your tank (after that first shutoff click) when fueling. You can flood your charcoal canister.

The charcoal captures the vapors that try to escape. It’s an emissions thing related to limits on fuel vapors and wont stop you from driving the car though it may give you a CEL. Charcoal filters are also a common way to capture and contain solder fumes.

Without a functional charcoal canister sensor, you cannot grill

But apparently, when you have a diesel you can go ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP!!!! I don’t know what made me open the flapper, but I was bored. Also notice how much fuel is all over inside there.
